Usenet news, online conferences, weblogs & RSS resources

  • 'Google Groups', search for one or more words in many thousands of Usenet messages. Look for people's Usenet messages and their email addresses, topics of interest,  newsgroups, etc.
  • 'Mailbase', UK electronic mailing list service for research in Higher Education, enabling groups to manage their own discussion topics and associated files.
  •  'Community' Netscape-run discussion groups:
  • List of moderated Usenet newsgroups & maintainers.
  • 'Agent' advanced Usenet news reading software with download functions.
  • BIOSCI/Bionet home page.
  • 'Experts Exchange' post and receive 'expert' information on computing and other topics.

    'Weblogs' or 'blogs': Online resources where authors and readers can post news, ideas, technical information and comments etc.'Blogroots' has a brief introduction to this area . Examples are:

    Weblog authors can protect their creativity by applying 'partial copyright' licenses to their weblogs, which are publicly accessible, using 'Creative Commons' licenses.

    Software to create and manage blogs and RSS news:

  •  Blogger
  •  Radio Userland.  I use 'Radio UserLand' for my blog. There are many uses for this software. For example, Dave Winer'sScripting News focuses on scripting languages (python primarily) and 'blogging' using the Radio Userland system. Tutorial on using 'FrontPage' with a 'Radio' weblog.

    'RSS feeds' publish news and information to the computers of their subscribers. Items are sent automatically, as compared with Usenet and 'posted' news, where items have to  be fetched by the user after they have been posted on the news server. There is atutorial by Mark Nottingham and a list of RSS resources, RSS feeds and RSS reader programs, by Aaron Swartz.

    • My.UserLand.Com allows you to read 'channels' of news maintained by over 150 individuals and editorial teams and to customize the presentation of those channels. The channels are updated frequently often several times a day.

    • DayPop and Technorati. Search for weblog entries.

    • BlogDex and Popdex. list current 'hot' blog topics.
