Windows NT
4.0 single & dual boot installation procedure
for Toshiba notebook computers
This page was prepared by Christopher Spry from information kindly provided by Robert Lawrence who noted that `these NT installation procedures (Single Boot and Dual Boot) have been updated to incorporate changes related to the order of installation. The later Toshiba models have some drivers (video, etc.) that require SP3 be installed prior to installing the drivers and this requirement has been accommodated in the updates. It is important to note that these installation procedure are not certified by Toshiba and any posting of these procedures must include that fact. These installation procedures (as you may have noted) are extremely detailed and include several personal preferences (usually noted).'

Windows NT4 single boot installation
(The following procedure was developed for Toshiba Notebook computers with one internal
hard drive and assumes that there are no other operating systems on the hard drive)
The Widows NT4 Single Boot Setup Installation procedure is completed in 8 distinct steps.
It is strongly recommended that the steps be completed in the order listed below.
Step 1. Partition your drive
Step 2. Obtain (download) from another computer the required Toshiba NT drivers and
utilities
Step 3. Install NT4 (CD-ROM assumed)
Step 4. Install NT Networking (If required)
Step 5. Install SP3
Step 6. Install Toshiba Drivers / Utilities
Install All Toshiba Drivers [Except APM (NT
Utils) and Sound]
Step 7. Install Remaining Toshiba Utilities / Drivers
Install APM, SCI, Utilities
Install Sound Drivers
Step 8. Install IE4.0 (or other browser if desired)
STEP 1. PARTITION YOUR DRIVE
Since this procedure assumes that there is no operating system installed on the computer
hard drive, it is necessary to utilize a disk utility that allows the hard drive to be
partitioned. Booting to DOS with a floppy disk that includes FDISK can be used to
partition the drive. Another application, Partition Magic is a utility and has been used
successfully for several installations.
A. Delete all partitions from the hard drive such that there is one and only one
allocation of drive space that is shown as Free Space.
B. The new partition created does not need to be formatted and can be left
as unformatted free space without selecting a partition type. However,
if you select to format the partition type (e.g. FAT16, FAT32, etc.),
you should select FAT16 (FAT not FAT32 to avoid problems with the NT
setup program not reading the partition.
STEP 2. DOWNLOAD TOSHIBA NT DRIVERS AND UTILITIES
Toshiba has provided NT drivers and utilities for most of the later models, and many of
the drivers/utilities are model specific, so be sure to obtain the correct ones. There are
several potential sources for these files including:
A. Toshiba BBS (714) 837-4408
B. Toshiba Compuserve On-Line Forum Libraries (TOSHPO)
C. Toshiba World Wide Web Site (PCSUPPORT.TAIS.COM)
The required files include:
o Video (Drivers)
o Sound (Drivers)
o Modem (Drivers or Definition [INF] file)
some modems can be correctly setup by
selecting the applicable model from the
available NT list without adding new drivers
o Utilities (Applications: Power Management, Hardware Setup, ...)
Some Toshiba models have additional NT drivers and/or applications such as
o Video Capture (Drivers)
o IDE Controller (Drivers)
Since the computer does not have an operating system, these files must be obtained using
another computer and stored on floppy or other removable media drives. Generally all files
are less than 1.44 Megabytes and will fit on a floppy drive. The exception to this is the
Toshiba Utilities which is usually greater than 2 Megabytes.
STEP 3. INSTALL NT4 (CD-ROM ASSUMED)
1. Insert Setup Disk into the floppy drive and boot the computer

Procedure for Windows 95/Windows NT4 dual boot
installation
(The following procedure was developed for Toshiba Notebook computers with one internal
hard drive and assumes that Windows 95 is already installed on the computer)
The Windows 95/Widows NT4 Dual Boot Setup Installation procedure is completed in 8
distinct steps. It is strongly recommended that the steps be completed in the order listed
below.
Step 1. Partition your drive to allow W95 and NT4 to exist on separate partitions
Step 2. Boot to Windows 95 and download the required Toshiba NT drivers and utilities
Step 3. Install NT4 (CD-ROM assumed)
Step 4. Install NT Networking (If required)
Step 5. Install SP3
Step 6. Install Toshiba Drivers / Utilities
Install All Toshiba Drivers [Except APM (NT
Utils) and Sound]
Step 7. Install Remaining Toshiba Utilities / Drivers
Install APM, SCI, Utilities
Install Sound Drivers
Step 8. Install IE4.0 (or other browser if desired)
STEP 1. PARTITION YOUR DRIVE
Since this procedure assumes that Windows 95 is installed on the computer hard drive, it
is necessary to utilize a disk utility that allows the hard drive to be partitioned
"on the fly" (i.e. without impacting the installed software or files). Partition
Magic is one such utility and has been used successfully for several installations.
A. Determine the percentage of disk space to be used for each operating system and the
applications/data used with each operating system
(My recommendation is a 50/50 or 60/40 split, but your actual choice will depend on how
many applications you use with each operating system)
B. Resize and/or create the hard drive partitions to match the percentages selected.
NOTE
The Windows 95 (FAT) partition will require enough free space (120 MEG recommended) for
the initial NT setup files.
C. The new partition created does not need to be formatted and can be left as unformatted
free space without selecting a partition type. However, if you select to format the
partition type (e.g. FAT16, FAT32, etc.), you should select FAT16 (FAT not FAT32 to avoid
problems with the NT setup program not reading the partition.
STEP 2. BOOT TO WINDOWS 95 AND DOWNLOAD TOSHIBA NT DRIVERS AND UTILITIES
Toshiba has provided NT drivers and utilities for most of the later models, and many of
the drivers/utilities are model specific, so be sure to obtain the correct ones. There are
several potential sources for these files including:
A. Toshiba BBS (714) 837-4408
B. Toshiba Compuserve On-Line Forum Libraries (TOSHPO)
C. Toshiba World Wide Web Site (PCSUPPORT.TAIS.COM)
The required files include:
o Video (Drivers)
o Sound (Drivers)
o Modem (Drivers or Definition [INF] file)
some modems can be correctly setup by
selecting the applicable model from the
available NT list without adding new drivers
o Utilities (Drivers - APM, SCI Applications: Hardware Setup, ...)
Some Toshiba models have additional NT drivers and/or applications such as
o Video Capture (Drivers)
o IDE Controller (Drivers)
I recommend that you create a folder (e.g. Toshiba NT Files) on the Windows 95 drive
(partition) and store these files on that drive (C Drive on most installations).
STEP 3. INSTALL NT4 (CD-ROM ASSUMED)
1. Insert Windows NT WorkStation CD into the CD-ROM drive
2. Select Windows NT Setup
3. Verify or change Windows NT Files Path (D:\I386 -where D is CD-ROM Drive)
